Former Celtic Goalkeeper Moves South Despite Recent Transfer Switch

Former Celtic B goalkeeper Josh Clarke has taken the next step in his career after leaving Partick Thistle, despite only making his move to Firhill permanent earlier this year.

Clarke spent last season on loan with Thistle and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most reliable performers. While Mark Wilson’s side fell short in their bid to secure promotion back to the Premiership, the 21-year-old emerged with plenty of credit after an impressive campaign between the posts.

His form convinced Thistle to act early. Clarke signed a pre-contract agreement in February, bringing an end to his time at Celtic and making the switch permanent ahead of the new season.

That stay has proved to be a brief one.

English League One side Doncaster Rovers have now secured Clarke on loan, with the agreement including an option to make the deal permanent when the January transfer window opens.

It is another opportunity for the young goalkeeper to test himself at a higher level and continue the progress he has made over the past 12 months.

Clarke’s performances have already attracted attention on the international stage. In March, he received a senior call-up for Northern Ireland ahead of friendly matches against Guinea and France, marking the fifth and sixth times he has been in and around the senior squad.

Although he is still waiting to make his senior international debut, regular football in England could strengthen his chances of earning that first cap in the months ahead.

During his time with Celtic B, Clarke made 39 appearances and kept 10 clean sheets. He showed plenty of promise and developed into one of the more dependable goalkeepers in the B team setup.

Even so, breaking through at Celtic was always going to be a significant challenge.

The pathway into the first team is difficult for any academy player, but it is particularly demanding for goalkeepers. With only one position available and experienced options usually trusted at senior level, opportunities are few and far between.

For Clarke, moving away from Celtic offered the chance to build a career through regular first-team football rather than waiting for an opening that may never have arrived.

His spell at Partick Thistle helped raise his profile, and the move to Doncaster Rovers now gives him another platform to continue that upward trajectory. At 21, he still has plenty of time on his side, and another strong season could put him firmly in the frame for both a permanent move and his long-awaited senior international debut.
