Julian Araujo has reported back for pre-season training with Bournemouth as speculation over his long-term future continues.
The Mexican international spent the second half of last season on loan at Celtic and made a positive impression before an untimely injury cut his campaign short.
Araujo brought quality and energy to the right-hand side during Alistair Johnston’s absence, quickly becoming a popular figure among supporters.
However, with Johnston’s future attracting attention following his impressive World Cup performances with Canada, Celtic could yet find themselves in the market for another right-back before the transfer window closes.
The Cherries are currently in Austria for their pre-season training camp, with fixtures against St. Pauli on 24 July and Augsburg on 30 July.
Araujo has travelled with the squad despite ongoing uncertainty over whether he will remain on the south coast this season.
While the defender appeared to enjoy his spell at Celtic and would likely be open to a return to Glasgow, completing a deal would be far from straightforward.
Bournemouth are believed to value the right-back at around £7 million, while his reported wages of around £50,000 per week would also represent a significant hurdle for Celtic.
Martin O’Neill Left the Door Open for Julian Araujo Return
Speaking last week, Celtic manager Martin O’Neill admitted he would be interested in bringing Araujo back if the opportunity presented itself.
“I felt he did very well for us. He obviously picked up an injury at an inopportune time for him.
“We are talking about a fight for right-back with Ali Johnston and Colby Donovan.
“I don’t know if Bournemouth would loan him out again, I would think they would want to sell him.
“I would keep it open, because you don’t know what could happen.
“If it was all within our scope, it’s something I would definitely look at, because he would be up for the fight. I haven’t been in contact with him for a few weeks, but overall I don’t know what Bournemouth’s position is.”
Those comments suggest Celtic have not completely closed the door on a reunion.
Whether one becomes possible may ultimately depend on Bournemouth’s willingness to lower their asking price or explore another loan agreement.
Araujo’s focus remains on impressing during pre-season in Austria, but with several weeks still remaining in the transfer window, this could be one story worth keeping an eye on.
