Kasper Schmeichel’s injury has brought a lot of discussion in recent days. The scale of the damage and the long recovery time have raised questions, especially among Celtic supporters trying to understand how it reached this point.
Some of that focus has turned towards how long he had been playing through the issue. There is also frustration around how the news came out, with details emerging during a live interview rather than through a club update.
Brian Riemer has pushed back against that. The Denmark manager has spoken in defence of Schmeichel, focusing on the player’s commitment rather than the criticism around him.
Riemer has pointed to how Schmeichel has approached his career and the way he has played for both club and country.
He said: (Bold), “Kasper called me and told me that his injury is worse than initially thought.
“It’s sad news to receive. It’s really a shame if such a fantastic career as Kasper’s has to end with a serious injury.
“Kasper has always played with a beating heart for both his clubs and the national team, and I think that is worth emphasising and remembering.
“Now we have to see how the operation goes and wish him all the best.”
There are two ways to look at Schmeichel playing through the injury.
One is the way Riemer sees it. A player pushing himself to stay available, trying to get through matches and keep his place ahead of a big summer with Denmark. With qualifiers coming up, that matters. Players want to be there, and sometimes that means taking on more than they should.
The other is, Schmeichel’s form has undoubtedly dipped over the last year, and there have been moments where his mistakes have cost Celtic. Some of those came in high-profile games, and the question now is whether the injury played a part in that.
Playing through pain can be seen as commitment, but it can also affect performance in big moments that decide games.
Riemer has made his position clear. He is backing the player. But at club level, the conversation is different, and it is not going away any time soon.
