Much has been made of Kasper Schmeichel’s form this season, but teammate Liam Scales has shrugged off criticism to defend his teammate.
The 39-year-old was called upon at a crucial stage of Celtic’s win over Falkirk, making a big save late in the game that ultimately secured all three points. It was the kind of big moment Schmeichel used to be well-known for, and he showed he’s still capable.
Looking at the bigger picture, the Denmark international’s ability to keep out simple shots has cost the team during this campaign. His wealth of experience is undeniable, but his performances have declined.
Scales has leapt to his defence, however, highlighting ‘fine margins’. The 27-year-old said (The Herald):
“He’s a brilliant player. Sometimes it’s just such fine margins. There’s ones that you think he saved and it’s just unlucky. He could have the same one again and he’ll save it. He’s a brilliant goalkeeper. He has been a brilliant goalkeeper for years and he still has so much quality.
“I think he’s pulled brilliant saves out for us over the season, especially Wednesday night as well. He made some great saves and they won us the game. It’s good to see. It’s brilliant to have a goalkeeper behind you performing like that.”
It looks unlikely that the Hoops will be in for a new goalkeeper during this transfer window, despite rumours. A striker is the clear priority, but there will come a time when the long-term goalkeeper situation must be addressed.
They face Auchinleck Talbot this Sunday in the Scottish Cup fourth round, meaning Martin O’Neill may give Viljami Sinisalo a rare opportunity to prove his worth.
The 24-year-old last featured against Livingston under Wilfried Nancy, but has seen his game time limited since arriving from Aston Villa in July 2024.
