Kasper Schmeichel’s latest injury comments have left a bit of uncertainty ahead of Celtic’s game with Motherwell. The Danish goalkeeper said he may need four to six weeks to properly rest his shoulder. That doesn’t quite match up with the idea he could be back involved this weekend.
Martin O’Neill said during the week that Schmeichel had trained and was feeling better after treatment. The manager didn’t rule out him being in the squad. But when the player himself is talking about needing a break, the situation feels less clear.
If Schmeichel ends up on the bench, that would suggest Celtic are being careful with him. Starting him straight away would raise a few eyebrows. His shoulder has been bothering him since last year and it doesn’t sound like the problem has fully settled.
There is also the question of Viljami Sinisalo. The 24-year-old has stepped in during Schmeichel’s absence and has handled multiple big games well. He has started against Stuttgart in Europe and twice against Rangers, as well as the trip to Aberdeen. Those are not easy matches for a goalkeeper to walk into.
Sinisalo has looked comfortable with the ball and confident dealing with crosses when the pressure builds late in games. Celtic often play with a high line, which means the goalkeeper has to read situations quickly and react when the ball drops into the box.
Because of that run, it would feel harsh to take him out of the team now. Form still matters when selections are made.
Schmeichel’s situation may simply come down to common sense. He has played through injuries before, but sometimes the best thing is to step back and allow the body to recover properly.
For now it feels straightforward. Sinisalo has done enough to keep the gloves while Schmeichel gets the time he needs.
If the young goalkeeper continues like this, Celtic may already be watching their next long-term number one grow into the role. At 24, he still has plenty of time ahead of him.
