Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from football after doctors told him he should not expect to return to elite level following his shoulder injury.

The Celtic goalkeeper confirmed the decision after months of trying to play through the problem. Schmeichel first damaged his left shoulder while away with Denmark in 2025, and later made it worse during Celtic’s Europa League defeat against Stuttgart in February. He continued playing for a period after that, but his form dipped badly as the season wore on.

By the winter months, criticism around Schmeichel had started to grow. There were difficult moments in Europe and shaky performances domestically where questions were asked about his reactions, handling and movement across the goal. Some supporters wanted Viljami Sinisalo brought into the side sooner as Celtic headed into the title run-in.

The Stuttgart match became a major talking point. Schmeichel struggled badly during the defeat and attention quickly turned toward whether the injury was affecting him more than anyone realised at the time. Looking back now, it explains plenty about the final stretch of his season. Celtic were relying on an experienced goalkeeper trying to get through matches while carrying a shoulder problem that would eventually end his career.

Schmeichel spoke openly about the situation during an interview.

He said: (TV2), “I have consulted several different surgeons and experts regarding my shoulder, and they have said that I should not expect to be able to return to elite football.

“I’ve thought a lot, but I think it’s the right time.”

Even after dropping out of the side in March, Schmeichel stayed close to the squad. He travelled to Motherwell, was present for the title-winning afternoon at Tynecastle against Hearts, and took his place on the bench during the Scottish Cup Final win over Dunfermline.

Sinisalo handled the final matches well, but Celtic now head into the summer needing clarity in the goalkeeper position before Champions League qualifiers begin.

His save in the League Cup Final shoot-out against Rangers in December 2024 remains one of the standout moments from his time at Celtic. The end was difficult, and the performances before his injury absence brought frustration at times, but the full picture looks different now that the extent of the shoulder damage is known.
