Many have had their say on Kasper Schmeichel’s bombshell announcement last night that his career could be over.
He revealed that he requires multiple surgeries on his dodgy shoulder and could be out for the next 10-12 months.
He only has until this summer remaining on his Celtic contract, so you can assume he’ll never pull on the Hoops again.
But, Chris Sutton believes that Kasper Schmeichel was using Celtic.
It’s well-known that the keeper was hoping to start between the sticks for his country at the World Cup this summer. They’re yet to qualify, mind you, but he seemed to be clinging onto that.
And while he had that dream in his head, he was costing Celtic.
Sutton expressed his opinion, and he was annoyed that he seemed to prioritise his Denmark dream over Celtic, ultimately using the club.
He told RecordSport:
“It seems his reasoning was nothing to do with Celtic. It’s like he was using them as a tool just get the game time for the World Cup.
“That’s the way he came across in that interview, because otherwise, why would he not have mentioned Celtic?
“Well, he never said that, as far as I could see. He didn’t talk about that. He just talked about his injury, not being the same and that hampering him for Denmark.
“Celtic can’t become THAT club, really.”
The former Celtic striker had previously called the keeper selfish for his Tuesday night announcement.
It is heartbreaking for the keeper that his career could be over like this. He was a brilliant Joe Hart replacement last season, bringing so much quality and experience to the squad.
While there is no getting away from how poor he has been this season, no player wants to have to call their career short before they want to.
