Johnny Kenny’s run in front of goal shows no sign of slowing down, with the Celtic striker now scoring in four straight games during his loan spell at Bolton Wanderers. His latest came in a chaotic 3-3 draw with Huddersfield on Saturday, where he helped spark a late fightback with ten men.
Kenny has been asked to play a few roles during this run. In this match, he started just behind the main striker instead of leading the line. It didn’t stop him getting into the right areas. If anything, it gave him more freedom to arrive into the box and attack space.
That flexibility has been clear since he joined Bolton. He’s been used through the middle, off the right, and now in a deeper attacking role. The goals have kept coming regardless of where he starts.
Bolton boss Steven Schumacher pointed to that quality after the match.
He said: (The Scotsman), “The players have shown time and time again that they don’t give up.
“When you’ve got players like Johnny Kenny, who have got that moment of magic in them, you’ve always got a chance.”
This run has come in games that open up a bit more. Bolton’s matches have space in them, especially between the lines and out wide. That suits Kenny. He looks more comfortable running into those gaps than playing with his back to goal and a defender tight on him.
He’s also getting more time on the pitch. He’s starting regularly now and seeing games out, which gives him more chances to affect things. Earlier in the season, those opportunities weren’t really there.
From a Celtic point of view, this is a different version of him. At Celtic Park, he was usually coming on late against teams sitting deep. Here, the game stretches more.
It comes down to rhythm. He’s playing every week, knows his role, and the team move the ball forward quickly. That’s helping him find his level.
