Kieran Tierney is pushing to be available for Celtic’s midweek clash against Livingston despite suffering a painful facial injury at the weekend.

The left-back was forced off with what was initially suspected to be concussion after taking a boot to the face during the Scottish Cup tie. No red card was shown for the incident, which left Tierney with a gash and requiring treatment before he was withdrawn as a precaution.

Further tests have since confirmed that Tierney did not suffer a concussion. Instead, the defender broke a bone in his nose, ruling out any head injury concerns but still leaving him with a sore one after a heavy knock.

Speaking on Tuesday, Martin O’Neill provided an update on the situation and suggested Tierney is keen to be involved as Celtic return to league action at Celtic Park.

“Kieran Tierney, as you know, came off with a suspected concussion, but I think he broke a bone in his nose,” O’Neill said to Celtic TV. “But he’s okay, he’s alright. I think he wants to be available.”

Tierney’s determination will come as no surprise. The full-back has carried a huge workload in recent weeks and has been one of Celtic’s most reliable performers during a difficult period. His availability would be a significant boost as Celtic look to secure three points against Livingston before turning attention to results elsewhere in the title race.

Whether Tierney is risked from the start or kept in reserve remains to be seen, but his willingness to play underlines his importance to the side. With fixtures coming thick and fast, Celtic will be hoping the injury proves manageable and that one of their key players can remain involved as the season enters a crucial phase.
