Celtic have, again, been linked with a move for Kieron Bowie.
The Hoops are expected to complete the signing of Colombian forward Camilo Duran, with the deal reported to be at its final stage after the player pushed for a move to Glasgow.
After that, Martin O’Neill is believed to want further additions before the new season gets underway. A goalkeeper and another striker are understood to be priorities as Celtic continue shaping the squad.
Bowie only joined the Italian side in January after completing a £5.5 million move from Hibernian. Despite scoring four goals in 14 appearances, he was unable to help Verona avoid relegation from Serie A.
The Scotland international, who has been capped twice at senior level, has naturally attracted attention after an encouraging spell on an individual level, even if the team’s season ended in disappointment.
The Italian club are said to not be considering offers below £13 million for the 23-year-old.
There is, however, reason to treat the latest report with a degree of caution.
Of course, that does not prevent the situation from changing quickly. Transfer windows move fast and initial contact can happen at any point if Celtic decide Bowie is the right fit.
For now, though, it sits firmly in the category of speculation.
Supporters have already seen plenty of names linked with the club this summer, many of them disappearing as quickly as they surfaced. Until there is movement between the clubs or a more substantial update, this is another rumour rather than an indication that a deal is close.
Celtic’s immediate focus remains on pre-season preparations.
The squad is now in Portugal ahead of its second friendly of the summer, with Sporting CP providing the opposition in the Algarve on July 14. The match offers another opportunity for players to build fitness and minutes as preparations for the new campaign continue, while the recruitment team works behind the scenes to strengthen the squad.
Transfer talk will continue, but O’Neill will be focused on working with the players currently at the club in the meantime.
