Former Celtic star Nicolas Kühn may be on the move this summer.
The German winger left the Hoops last year in a deal worth around £16.5 million after playing a major role under Brendan Rodgers. He arrived from Rapid Vienna in January 2024 and went on to win four trophies during his time in Glasgow.
Kühn made 69 appearances for Celtic, scoring 24 goals and providing 18 assists. Although it took him a little time to settle, he developed into one of Rodgers’ most influential attacking players and looked capable of producing something whenever he was on the ball.
That form has not followed him to Italy.
Since joining Como, the 26-year-old has made 25 appearances but has found the net just once. He has also struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, with opportunities becoming increasingly limited as the season progressed.
Now his future appears to be in doubt.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Como manager Cesc Fabregas has informed Kühn that he is surplus to requirements ahead of the club’s first Champions League campaign. The report states the former Celtic winger is among a group of players “at risk of being redundant, potentially available on loan or permanently” as the Serie A side reshape their squad.
It is a difficult position for a player who looked to have found the perfect environment to kick on at Celtic. Rodgers trusted him, his confidence grew, and supporters saw the quality that had convinced the club to bring him in from Austria.
The move to one of Europe’s top leagues was an understandable step in his career, but the reality has been far less rewarding.
There has been no suggestion of a return to Celtic at this stage and nothing to indicate the club are considering a move. Even so, a player with Kühn’s pedigree is unlikely to be short of interest if Como decide to move him on during this window.
His situation is another reminder that leaving Celtic does not always lead to bigger or better opportunities on the pitch. Regular football, confidence and the right manager can be difficult to replace, regardless of the size of the league.
As the transfer window develops, Kühn’s name may well surface in connection with clubs looking to strengthen their wide options. For now, though, his next move remains uncertain.
