Andy Murray has made a surprising call in the Scottish title race backing Heart of Midlothian to win the league ahead of Celtic and Rangers.
The former world number one, a Hibs supporter, admitted his stance may not go down well, given Hearts are Hibs’ fiercest rivals.
But for Murray, the bigger picture matters more.
Speaking on the title race, he said: “I’ll probably get hammered for this but I personally think it’s a good thing for Scottish football if Hearts were able to win it.
“Obviously as a Hibs fan there is a huge rivalry there but it’s been a long time since a team other than Celtic or Rangers won the league.” [RecordSport]
For much of the campaign, Hearts have led the way, with Celtic chasing and Rangers also in the mix, creating a genuine three-way title fight heading into the split.
Celtic sit just three points behind at this stage, with five games to go and key fixtures still to come, including a potentially decisive final day clash with Hearts at Celtic Park.
But Murray is hoping for a change in the Scottish football landscape.
A break from the traditional dominance of Celtic would represent a significant shift in Scottish football, but it’s not what we want.
Celtic needs to go on an impressive run until the end of the season, winning every game.
The Hoops haven’t beaten Hearts or Rangers in the league in six attempts this season, so it’s no easy ask.
