Scott Brown probably expected a polite answer when he asked Neil Lennon about Dunfermline reaching the Scottish Cup Final.
Instead, he got one of the most honest responses of the week.
Brown was interviewing Lennon ahead of Saturday’s Hampden clash with Celtic when he pointed out the scale of the turnaround at Dunfermline. Fourteen months ago they were battling near the bottom end of the Championship. Now they are one match away from silverware.
Lennon immediately shut down any romantic version of the story.
“You beat us 3-0 at a canter. We were a mess.”
That line summed the whole exchange up.
It was funny because of how blunt Lennon delivered it, but underneath it there was real context around the job he has done at East End Park. Dunfermline genuinely were struggling badly when he arrived. Confidence looked shot and physically they could not cope with better sides in the division.
Brown knew it as well because his Ayr United side comfortably beat Lennon’s Dunfermline early on.
The clip also worked because there was no media polish anywhere in the conversation. Brown admitted honestly he never saw a cup final coming either. Lennon openly agreed.
That realism probably explains why Dunfermline improved under him.
Lennon stopped trying to overcomplicate things. They became tougher defensively first. Midfield battles started mattering more. They stayed alive in matches longer and gradually built belief from there. By the time they reached the latter stages of the Scottish Cup, they looked like a proper Lennon side physically and mentally.
The exchange between the pair quickly spread online.
Brown said: (BBC Sport Scotland), “Fourteen months ago, you got announced on film and manager. Relegation battle. To now, sitting here, 90 minutes away from a cup final.
“Did you see this coming when you first walked in that door?“
Lennon responded: “No, of course not.“
Brown joked: “And can I be honest, did I see this coming?
“No.“
Lennon finished: “You played against me in the first game. You beat us 3-0 at a canter. We were a mess.”

The “by hook or by crook” line later in the interview also felt very Lennon.
He does not care how pretty Saturday looks. Dunfermline are not going to Hampden trying to dominate Celtic for 90 minutes. The plan will be to stay organised, survive pressure and make the game uncomfortable for as long as possible.
He knows exactly how difficult it is dragging a struggling Championship side toward a cup final because he has been living inside that division himself.
