Daizen Maeda has warned Brazil that Japan believe they can cause a World Cup shock after helping his country into the knockout stages.
The Celtic forward was on target as Japan drew 1-1 with Sweden, a result that kept them unbeaten and secured their place in the next round.
Speaking after Japan’s draw with Sweden, Maeda said: (TCW) “Of course, the match against Brazil is bound to be tough, but as long as we perform at our usual levels, we have a chance to win.”
That is the kind of belief Japan will need. Brazil will go into the tie as strong favourites, but Japan have already shown enough in the tournament to suggest they will not be easy to shift.
Maeda’s goal against Sweden was a big personal moment too. The Celtic attacker has had to stay patient at times during the tournament, but he made his mark when Japan needed him.
He said: “The team will take advantage of the rest time now and recover and prepare for the game in all aspects. For me personally, I was delighted to score.
“I am very happy to score because we have so many fans over here cheering for us, so it was important not to let them down.”
For Celtic supporters, it was another reminder of what Maeda brings. His movement, pressing and timing remain huge parts of his game, but he also showed his finishing touch on the world stage.
Japan would have wanted all three points against Sweden, but qualification was the main target. They now move on without a defeat and with confidence growing.
Maeda added: “I am disappointed not to have won, but we remain unbeaten, and it is a good achievement to have qualified for the knockout stages.”
The Brazil tie now gives Maeda the biggest platform of his tournament so far. Celtic will be watching closely, with their forward heading into the knockout rounds in good form and with clear belief that Japan can make life difficult for one of the favourites.
