Martin O’Neill has provided an early update on Daizen Maeda after the forward left Easter Road with what looked like an ankle issue.

Maeda played a key role in Celtic’s 2-1 win over Hibernian, opening the scoring and again leading the line with his usual energy. His movement caused problems throughout, especially in the first half when Celtic were on top.

There was concern at full-time, though. The Japanese forward was seen leaving the pitch without a boot and appeared to be dealing with some bruising around his ankle.

At this stage of the season, any knock carries weight. Celtic have three league games left and little room to rotate in attacking areas, especially with Maeda’s current form.

O’Neill spoke after the match and addressed the situation.

He said: (Sky Sports), “I’m hoping he’s alright. I think that when we were discussing things in the dressing room, that didn’t rear its head at this minute.

“I’m hoping he’s going to be okay. I desperately hope he’s going to be okay because we need him. Big three games now.”

The update leaves things open. There was no immediate sign of a serious issue in the dressing room, but the visual of Maeda leaving the pitch without a boot will raise questions.

His role in the team is hard to replace. He stretches defences, presses from the front, and makes runs that create space for others. That showed again with his goal, reacting quickly in the box.

If he is unavailable, Celtic would need to adjust how they attack. Iheanacho offers a different profile, more of a presence in the box rather than constant movement in behind.

The timing is not ideal. With Hearts and Rangers still in the race, every game now demands the strongest available side.

Celtic now face Rangers at Celtic Park next Sunday, followed quickly by a trip to Fir Park to take on Motherwell, before finishing the season at home to Hearts. That run will shape the title race. With so little between the sides, having Maeda fit and available could make the difference.
