Celtic could soon face a major decision over Daizen Maeda after Ipswich Town reportedly stepped up their interest in the Japan international.
SunSport reports that the newly promoted Premier League side have made a move for the 28-year-old and are keen to progress matters quickly. There is no confirmation, however, that Ipswich have submitted a formal bid or reached any agreement with Celtic.
The situation is seemingly becoming increasingly difficult for the Hoops to ignore.
Maeda has one year remaining on his contract and has already spoken publicly about his wish to play in England. Celtic must now decide whether to consider offers this summer or risk allowing one of their most valuable attacking players to enter the final months of his deal.
Speaking recently about his ambitions, Maeda said: “I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League ever since I went to Celtic, so I think this year might be my chance.
“My strongest desire is to play in the Premier League for at least a year. I haven’t really thought about what comes after that.
“I think it’s the best league, and I’m confident I can do it there, so that’s why I want to take on the challenge.”
Those comments leave little doubt about the player’s preferred next step, although Celtic remain in control unless Ipswich meet their valuation.
Maeda has been a key part of the side since arriving from Yokohama F Marinos in January 2022. His speed, work rate and ability to play through the middle or from the left have made him one of Celtic’s most dependable attacking options.
Celtic have been linked with Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan, while Bodo/Glimt striker Kasper Høgh has also been mentioned as a target. Neither situation has reached a confirmed conclusion, and there is no guarantee that either player would be a direct replacement for Maeda.
For now, Ipswich’s reported move represents interest rather than a completed transfer. The next significant development will be whether that interest turns into a formal offer and, crucially, whether Celtic believe the fee is strong enough to sanction the departure of one of their biggest players.
