Daizen Maeda has admitted he feels this summer could be the right time to leave Celtic, with the Japan international again making clear his ambition to play in the Premier League.
Maeda has been linked with a move away from Celtic after another strong season in Glasgow, and his latest comments will only add to the uncertainty.
He said: (Via Daily Record), “I’ve always said that I want to play in the Premier League, but I think I’ll just play wherever I am.
“In terms of timing, I think this is the right time. But you never know what will happen…”
That is the clearest sign yet that Maeda would be open to a move this summer.
He is not demanding an exit, and he also made clear he will continue to give everything wherever he is playing. But the timing comment will catch the attention of Celtic supporters, especially with Maeda now entering the final 12 months of his contract.
Maeda added: “Of course, I’ve been saying ever since I went to Celtic that I want to play in the Premier League.
“But it’s difficult because I’m 28 years old, and when I talk to people, it’s kind of a ‘hmm’ feeling.”
The forward appears aware that his age could affect the level of interest in him.
At 28, Maeda is entering the stage of his career where this may be his best remaining chance to make the move to England he has spoken about for some time.
He added: “But you never know what kind of offer will come. But no matter which team it is, I think I’ll just keep going.”
That leaves Celtic in an interesting position.
Maeda remains one of the most important players in Martin O’Neill’s squad. His work rate, speed and ability to play across the front line give Celtic something few other players can offer.
Losing him would leave a major gap, especially with the club already needing more attacking options this summer.
The contract situation also adds pressure. With Maeda entering the final year of his deal, Celtic risk seeing his value drop if no extension is agreed and no transfer takes place.
However, if a serious Premier League offer arrives, Maeda’s comments suggest he would be willing to consider it.
There is no indication yet that a transfer is close, but the player himself has now admitted he believes the timing may be right.
