Martin O’Neill has given an honest insight into his Celtic future just hours after being confirmed as the club’s permanent manager.
For supporters, the announcement brought clarity after weeks of debate. O’Neill is back in the manager’s chair, and the club can now start moving properly towards next season.
But speaking on Track Radio after his appointment was confirmed, O’Neill made it clear that he is not looking too far ahead.

He said: “It’s been a busy day, yes.
“The club gave me some time to think about it, probably because of my age as much as anything else, and whether I would have the energy, determination and all those things that go with it.
“Despite the fact that I’ve not been away on holiday yet, you get some sort of rejuvenation, and I kind of feel up to it.
“Time will tell. I must admit, I’m in a better headspace, if there’s such a thing in this life as being in a better headspace.”
That is classic O’Neill. Honest, self-aware and not dressing things up.
The one-year deal always felt like the sensible structure. Celtic get a manager who knows the club, understands the pressure and has already shown he can get a response from the squad. O’Neill, meanwhile, gets the chance to attack the job without pretending this is some long-term project stretching years into the future.
He was just as clear when asked about the option of another year.
He said: “It’s another year of your life, and options in general don’t really mean a great deal.
“It means that all parties have to agree to it, so for instance, if things went really well and I was asking for another year, which is very, very unlikely, I must admit, if I took this length of time to think about this year, so you can imagine what another year of your life will do.
“But if, for instance, I thought that everything was going fine and I wanted another year, that’s up to the football club to make that decision.
“They may disagree, so it doesn’t really matter, and vice-versa, like everything else.
“If things were going well, and the club wanted you to stay, but you didn’t feel up to it, then it doesn’t really mean a great deal in those sort of terms.
“So I just think I can only deal with the immediacy of things as much as anything else, and that’s like just round the corner.”
It is a reminder that Celtic’s new managerial plan is built around the here and now.
That will not bother many supporters. O’Neill has never been appointed to oversee a five-year rebuild. He has been brought back because the club need stability, authority and a manager who can handle the noise straight away.
The summer will be huge. Celtic need transfer business done properly, clarity on the backroom team and a squad ready for Champions League qualifiers.
O’Neill sounds like a man who knows the size of the job. He also sounds like someone who has accepted it with his eyes open.
For now, that is enough.
Celtic have their manager. O’Neill has his year. What comes after that will depend on what happens on the pitch.
yes me and a lot of my fellow Celtic fans get frustated there theres very little coming out of Celtic officailly when I think Id rather that than the things getting wroye about other clubs transfer work buying and selling when the transfer windows still closed Celtic have renewed contracts for players but with world cup started theres not much transfer news with those involed so there looks like it will be frustating for all so forget your protest Green brigade about board and ultras and there anurchrists about hamas you are going to get nothing but grief if an Isreala top player signs for celtic you are the ones that the true fans will be turning on
