Martin O’Neill addressed the reaction from Celtic supporters after full-time at Tannadice, where frustration was aimed towards the board following the defeat to Dundee United. The scenes in the away end reflected a wider mood that has been building over recent months.
The result itself added to that feeling. Celtic had control of the ball for long spells but never found a way through. Dundee United stayed compact and took their chances when they came, leaving Celtic chasing the game.
When the second goal went in, the match felt done. The response from the players never really came, and the travelling support reacted to that. The frustration did not stay on the pitch. It carried beyond it.
He said: (BBC Sport), “Well, that’s nothing new.
“So you’re bringing up something here that hasn’t been the minute that we don’t have a good result.
“Of course, people resort to these particular things, right?
“Okay. And yeah, we disappointed an awful lot of people here today.
“We disappointed the supporters who made their way here for a start and secondly, we disappointed people who support us from a distance.”
O’Neill’s point is clear enough. When results dip, the reaction follows. At Tannadice, Celtic didn’t give anyone much to hold onto, and you could feel that in the stands.
They had plenty of the ball but never really looked like scoring. Dundee United stayed organised, kept their shape, and waited. When the chances came, they took them.
That leaves Celtic dealing with more than just the result. The performance wasn’t there, and the mood around the club reflects that. What happens next on the pitch will decide how that shifts.
