Martin O’Neill has made it clear he holds no expectations about staying on at Celtic in any capacity once Wilfried Nancy officially takes charge.
Since returning in an interim role, O’Neill has steadied Celtic through a demanding period and lifted the squad during a turbulent managerial transition.
His impact has prompted questions about whether he could remain involved in some form once Nancy arrives, particularly given how seamlessly he has reconnected with the players and supporters. But the 73-year-old has poured cold water on any assumptions, reminding everyone that this is Nancy’s project to lead.
O’Neill has been consistent throughout his short spell: he would guide Celtic during the transition, but he would not interfere with long-term decisions. His phrasing on Tuesday only reinforced that stance.
Whatever happens next, he does not intend to impose himself or stand in the way of the new direction the club is preparing to take under Nancy.
What he did offer, however, was openness. If Nancy wants insight into the last few weeks, O’Neill said he is willing to provide it.
If not, he will happily step aside without hesitation. After navigating Celtic through European fixtures, domestic pressure and the emotional weight of a club in flux, O’Neill wants the handover to be clean, controlled and fully in the hands of the man replacing him.
He said: (talkSPORT), “No, I really don’t know.
“And I think that will be for the manager to decide. He should be given free rein to pick his staff, which he will want to do, and anything else concerning football should really be up to him.
“If the incoming manager wants my opinion on things over the last number of weeks that is fine, if he doesn’t that is not a problem. I would never advise him, there is no such thing as advice to a fellow manager in that sense.
“There has been no talk of collaboration.
“I will assume the manager that is coming in will have looked at our games, certainly our recent games, and then made some sort of decision for himself. I get back to the point, it’s very much his team when he steps into the breach.”
O’Neill’s comments underline a man fully aware of the boundaries that come with a managerial transition.
Although Celtic have benefitted from his clarity and calmness during a hectic spell, he has no interest in shaping Nancy’s staff or influencing the new structure. For supporters who have revelled in this unexpected return, it confirms that his role was always designed to be finite.
At the same time, his willingness to answer questions or offer context shows he still cares deeply about Celtic’s immediate stability.
