Marcelo Saracchi’s performances at Celtic have caught the attention of Martin O’Neill, with the defender even receiving praise from the manager during Stuttgart away eight days ago.
The Uruguayan arrived in Glasgow on loan from Boca Juniors and has largely operated behind Kieran Tierney in the pecking order at left-back. Opportunities have been limited, but when Saracchi has stepped into the side he has shown the experience expected from a player who has featured across several leagues.
One of those chances came away to Stuttgart. Celtic travelled to Germany needing a strong display, and Saracchi was given the nod in defence. The match demanded concentration from the back line as the German side pushed forward in search of control.

“Imagine, in the first match! And the other day, against Stuttgart, it was half-time and he shook his hand in front of the whole group, congratulating him.
“I was explaining to Saracchi: ‘this is not normal, that in England, that a coach of Martin O’Neill’s level does this with a player.”
For a player who has often been used as cover, those moments matter. Recognition from a manager during a game can give a defender confidence, especially in a European away fixture.
Saracchi’s role at Celtic has mostly been about stepping in when needed. Tierney has kept the starting place whenever fit, but the season has shown how quickly that situation can change through injuries or rotation.
The Stuttgart match offered a reminder of what Saracchi brings when he plays. Calm defending. Reliable positioning. A willingness to do the simple work that keeps a back line steady.
