Neil Lennon has given his backing to Martin O’Neill remaining in charge of Celtic, insisting the veteran manager earned the right to keep the job after rescuing the club’s season.
The pair shared a warm moment at full-time of the Scottish Cup Final after O’Neill’s Celtic side defeated Lennon’s Dunfermline Athletic team to complete a domestic double.
It was a fitting image given the history between the two men.
Lennon was one of the key figures in O’Neill’s legendary Celtic side in the early 2000s, having worked with the gaffer before.
Now, with O’Neill expected to remain in charge on a one-year deal, Lennon believes the club have made the correct call.
Speaking about the news, which is yet to be officially confirmed by Celtic, Lennon said:
“I am delighted.
“I think he earned the right to be the Celtic manager. I think it should have been his decision and his alone.”
Martin O’Neill had said towards teh end of last season that the club would be looking for a younger manager, someone with fresher ideas. But the club have decided to give the job to Martin.
There were some brief talks with Robbie Keane, but he was met with backlash from supporters. His CV wasn’t the most impressive either.
Hopefully, Celtic can announce their manager pick sooner rather than later.
