Martin O’Neill Set for Special Recognition

Martin O’Neill’s future at Celtic remains unclear, but the former Hoops boss is already being considered for a special honour away from football.

A proposal has been put forward at Causeway Coast and Glens Council to formally recognise O’Neill’s achievements in the game. The Kilrea native recently guided Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title after returning to management midway through the season.

The 74-year-old then completed the domestic double by leading Celtic to Scottish Cup success at Hampden. Despite that achievement, there is still no certainty over whether he will remain in charge next season, with ongoing talks taking place regarding the managerial position.

While that situation continues to develop, councillors in his hometown are looking at ways to recognise a career that has spanned decades as both a player and manager.

The motion was presented during a council meeting and has been backed for further consideration.

Councillor Leanne Peacock outlined the proposal and the reasons behind it.

She said: (Northern Ireland World), “That this council recognises and celebrates the outstanding sporting achievements of Martin O’Neill, a native of Kilrea, whose distinguished career has brought immense pride and recognition to Kilrea and the wider Causeway Coast and Glens Borough.

“Council notes his exceptional contribution to football both as a player and manager, including winning two European Cups with Nottingham Forest, captaining at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, and enjoying major managerial success with clubs including Leicester City, Celtic and Aston Villa.

“Council further notes his recent return to management with Celtic, culminating in the remarkable achievement of winning the league title at the age of 74, demonstrating his enduring leadership and contribution to the game.

The proposal includes the possibility of a commemorative plaque in Kilrea. Councillors are also considering whether O’Neill should be awarded the Freedom of the Borough.

It is the latest recognition for a figure whose connection with Celtic supporters has only grown stronger following his return to the dugout. When he took charge in January, Celtic were trailing Hearts.

By the end of the campaign, O’Neill had delivered the league title and Scottish Cup. That achievement has kept him firmly in the conversation over the manager’s job, even as Celtic continue to explore other options.

For now, the discussions over his future at Parkhead continue. Back in Kilrea, there is already a move underway to ensure his latest success is remembered long after this summer’s managerial talks are settled.
