Martin O’Neill has confirmed that Kieran Tierney will return to the squad for Saturday’s match against Motherwell at Celtic Park. The left-back has been working his way back from injury and missed the shootout win over Rangers.
Tierney’s absence was felt down the left side during that period. When he plays, Celtic gain more than a defender who holds his position. He pushes high when the team build attacks and often overlaps the winger ahead of him.

That movement changes how opponents defend. Full-backs are forced to track his runs, which opens space for midfielders arriving around the edge of the box. It also gives Celtic another route when teams defend deep.
The defender returned to training earlier this week and looked comfortable during sessions at Lennoxtown. O’Neill confirmed that progress has been enough to bring him back into the squad for the Motherwell fixture.
He said: (The National), “But Kieran is in better shape and he will be there.”
Whether Tierney starts the game remains unclear. After time out with injury, managers often reintroduce players gradually to avoid setbacks.

Tierney’s energy often helps Celtic create that pressure. His runs force defenders to move and open small gaps in crowded areas.
Saturday’s game will show how close he is to full match sharpness. For now, O’Neill simply has another experienced option available as Celtic look to keep their momentum going in the league.
