After working as the Goalkeeper Coach at Queens Park, McGovern (41 caps for Northern Ireland, 32) has returned to Parkhead where he grew up as an academy player.
His resume includes stints with Ross County, Falkirk, Hamilton and 7 years with Norwich City.
McGovern will be working with both the B Team and First Team at Celtic. This is important as it creates a pathway for young goalkeepers to follow into the Senior Side. It also ensures the Standards in the academy and seniors are in line with each other. And it also provides Martin O’Neill another experienced voice in a key area of the club.
This hire continues the pattern that Celtic are using to build their staff. They are leaning more on people who they believe have a deep understanding of the demands and culture of the club. Stephen McManus the biggest example of this in recent years. Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham are currently a part of O’Neill’s coaching staff.
Building a bridge from the B Team to the first team should be vital. Celtic needs to make sure they have the next generation ready, and that means the goalkeeper group as well. By having McGovern involved with both sides of the squad, Celtic can mirror training frameworks, improve communication, and manage the transitions for the developing keepers making the step up.
Overall, Celtic have made made a practical hire that fits perfectly with the club’s coaching pathway, and their emphasis on continuity. McGovern knows the club, understands the league, and comes with the credibility after a decent career.
