Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson has been appointed to a key position within Scottish football’s governing structure ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The appointment represents another significant role for Nicholson, who remains one of the most influential figures at Celtic despite ongoing criticism from sections of the support.
Supporter unrest has been a recurring theme throughout the past season, with protests directed towards the club’s hierarchy and the Celtic chief executive regularly finding himself at the centre of criticism.
Nicholson has largely remained out of the public spotlight during that period and has not spoken publicly since January.
His appointment to the SPFL board comes following a change in personnel among the Premiership representatives.
The Celtic chief replaces former Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart, who was elected to the board last season but departed Ibrox after leaving his position with the club in November.
While the role is unlikely to alter opinions among supporters either way, it does further underline Nicholson’s standing within Scottish football’s executive landscape.
The SPFL board plays a central role in overseeing the running of the professional game in Scotland, including league operations, commercial matters and planning across all four divisions.
For Nicholson, it adds another responsibility to a summer that is already shaping up to be a crucial one for Celtic as the club prepares for Champions League qualifiers, a major recruitment drive and the expected confirmation of Martin O’Neill as permanent manager.
