Craig Gordon has turned off the comments on his latest Instagram post after describing Hearts’ title defeat to Celtic as an “injustice”.
The former invincible treble winning Hoops goalkeeper, now back at Hearts, posted a lengthy reflection on the dramatic final day of the season, three weeks after the Tynecastle side saw the title snatched away from them in the most brutal fashion.
Gordon wrote: “It’s taken 3 weeks to find the words, and I still don’t really think I’ve found them.”
He added that the day was “one of the most emotional moments” of his career, before listing “the anger, the disappointment, the injustice.”
That word is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Hearts did not lose the league because of an injustice. They lost it because Celtic, in the final moments of the final day, found a way to get over the line after one of the most chaotic, traumatic and self-inflicted seasons in recent memory.
That is football. It is cruel, dramatic, glorious and brutal, often all at once.
Nobody at Parkhead would pretend the champions made it easy for themselves. This was a campaign full of boardroom unrest, fan anger, managerial upheaval and avoidable chaos. Celtic spent much of the season making life harder than it ever needed to be.
Yet when it mattered, they still delivered.
That seems to be the part too many people have struggled to process. Since the title was won, there has been an extraordinary wave of bitterness from Hearts fans, Rangers fans and some corners of the media. Some appear annoyed not by how Celtic won it, but by the fact Celtic won it at all.
The argument seems to have shifted from football to entitlement. Hearts have not won the league for generations, Celtic have won plenty, so apparently the fairytale should have belonged to someone else.
That is not how titles are won.
Celtic were not handed anything. They had to survive their own mess, absorb the pressure and find the moment that decided the season. Hearts had their chance to finish the job and could not do it.
For Gordon, a player who enjoyed great success with the Bhoys, the tone of the post feels unfortunate. He spoke movingly about the bond between the Hearts players and supporters outside Tynecastle, and there is no doubt that group gave everything.
But calling it an injustice crosses into the same hysterical territory that has surrounded Celtic’s title win ever since the final whistle.
There has also been a notable absence of grace from the Hearts side. No public congratulations. No humility. No acknowledgement that Celtic, for all their flaws, still did what champions do.
Some players play for Celtic. Some are Celtic players.
