Celtic have this morning out their under 18 academy players on the government furlough scheme Mail Sport are reporting.

The scheme is there to help businesses pay a percentage of their wage while they can’t work due to the pandemic.

It seems like we creep from one poor PR exercise to the next. The same people who criticised the Dubai trip will now be asking why they paid for training camp if they can’t afford to keep paying their under 18s.

The wage bill will be small but the players are doing absolutely nothing at the moment with no competitive fixtures.

Celtic were hoping to ride out this pandemic without having to put players on furlough but as it looks right now, there’s no end in sight to the current restrictions while we’re in the sharp end of this pandemic.

Celtic furloughed a lot of staff within Celtic Park last summer when things shutdown. It’s likely we’re going to see a highly critical response to this. Other clubs are likely to follow suit.
