Alistair Johnston has taken another step forward in his return after a long spell out, with Martin O’Neill confirming the defender has completed a full week back in training.

The right-back made his comeback from the bench against Falkirk, getting minutes into his legs for the first time since October. It was a controlled return, brought on late in the game rather than thrown straight back into the starting side.

Since then, the focus has been on building him up properly. A week on the training pitch matters. It allows him to get back into the rhythm of the squad and handle the demands that come with his role in the team.

Celtic rely on Johnston for more than just defending. He pushes high, supports the winger, and helps stretch the pitch on the right side. That takes sharpness and timing, not just fitness. Getting through training sessions without issue is the first step towards that.

O’Neill provided an update on where Johnston stands heading into the weekend.

He said: (Celtic FC YouTube), “Alistair Johnston has done a week’s work as well too, so that’s encouraging. We’re okay, nothing new.”

The update keeps things steady. Johnston is back on the pitch, but that does not mean he goes straight into the starting eleven.

After a layoff, it is about how the body reacts. Training is one thing. Match pace is different. Full-backs cover ground quickly and change direction often. That is where the real test comes.

Celtic have managed without him in recent months, adjusting how they use the right side. Bringing him back adds another option, but it needs to be timed properly.

The next step is minutes. Short spells at first, then more if he comes through them well.

There are only a few games left. That shapes the decision. It is about what he can give now, not rushing him for the sake of it.
