Martin O’Neill has backed his available defenders to step in as Celtic prepare for their Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren without Liam Scales. The centre-back misses the match through suspension, forcing a change at the heart of the defence.
Scales has been a regular presence this season, often used when Celtic look to build from the back. His absence removes a natural starter, which has shaped how the defence is expected to line up at Hampden.
Celtic are already light in that area. Injuries have limited consistency, and the pairing has changed often across the campaign. This latest disruption means another reshuffle in a big game.
The focus now turns to those coming in. Auston Trusty is set to adjust his role, while younger options are expected to feature alongside him. It will be a different look, and one that hasn’t had much time together on the pitch.
Asked ‘Liam Scales is suspended. Are you confident in whoever does step up?’
He said: (Celtic FC YouTube), “Oh yeah, absolutely. I would have no doubts about that.
“I’ve got two right-footers as well, so Trusty will move over to the left-hand side.
“But yeah, I’ve got lots of confidence in Benjamin Arthur and Dane Murray.”
Trusty moving across is still the first part of the change, but it’s not unfamiliar territory for him. He is comfortable on the left and has already played there, including in the recent game at Ibrox against Rangers. That helps when it comes to building from the back, as the ball moves more naturally.
Alongside him, Benjamin Arthur or Dane Murray would bring energy but not much experience at this level. That puts more demand on positioning rather than recovery, especially against a St Mirren side that looks to break quickly.
Celtic have had spells this season where defensive partnerships have changed mid-run. Each time, it has taken a few games to settle. This one comes in a one-off match, with no room to grow into it.
The test is clear. Deal with the direct threat, hold the line, and avoid giving away cheap counter-attacks.
