Martin O’Neill has given a fresh update on Callum Osmand, with the Celtic manager indicating the young striker could still feature before the end of the season.

Osmand has been out since November, missing a large part of the campaign just as he was beginning to break into the first-team picture. His absence has left Celtic without that option to stretch defences with runs in behind.

There have been setbacks along the way. Recovery has not been straightforward, with small issues slowing his progress and pushing back any return date.

Now, though, there are signs he is getting closer. Training has stepped up, and there is a sense that he is moving into the final phase of his recovery.

O’Neill said: (TCW), “I would hope so (Osmand will feature before the end of the season), yeah.

“He’s doing really well. He’ll do the same sort of work as [Alistair] Johnston next week, which is encouraging.”

That comparison gives a clearer picture of where Osmand is. Johnston has been working his way back into full training, and following a similar plan suggests Osmand is not far behind.

For Celtic, that opens up another option in the forward line. Osmand offers something different. He looks to run beyond defenders rather than come short, which can stretch a back line and create space for others.

That type of movement has been missing at times. In games where teams sit in, Celtic have often been forced to play in front of the defence. A forward willing to make those runs changes the shape of the game.

There is still no rush. Bringing him back too quickly would risk another setback, and the focus will be on building him up properly through training before any minutes are given.

But the door is now open. If he continues on this path, there is a chance he will be involved before the campaign ends.

After months out, that would be a step forward for both player and club.
