Celtic’s struggles to control games have been laid bare in recent weeks, and one Scottish journalist believes the signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could go a long way to addressing that problem.
There has been a growing sense that Celtic are being outrun and outworked at key moments, particularly in midfield. Too often, games have become open and chaotic, with the side failing to impose themselves in the way supporters have come to expect.
The lack of control has not only affected performances but also injected uncertainty into a title race where margins are already tight.
Bringing in a player of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s quality and experience is viewed by many as a timely boost. While the former England international is still building match fitness after a long spell without competitive football, there is optimism that he could begin to influence games quickly. A first appearance from the bench against Livingston on Wednesday night is not being ruled out.
Speaking on Hotline Live, RecordSport journalist Michael Gannon highlighted why the midfielder’s arrival could be significant. He said: “If he can come in and give Celtic a bit of control, because Celtic aren’t controlling games, which is very un-Celtic-like.
“I mean, even Dundee at times at the weekend, Hearts the previous week. They’re not controlling games and it’s creating a lot of uncertainty for Celtic. I think if they keep playing the way they’re playing just now, they’re going to come a cropper and they won’t win the league.
“If these guys can pull it together, they’ve got a chance.”
While results have been scraped together, the dominance that usually defines Celtic has been missing. Oxlade-Chamberlain’s ability to carry the ball, manage tempo and offer physical presence in midfield could help restore some balance.
Expectations will be tempered as the Ox works his way back to full sharpness. But if he can provide even a measure of control in the middle of the park, Celtic may yet steady themselves at a critical stage of the season.
