Wilfried Nancy is already under intense scrutiny after three defeats in his first three games in charge at Celtic, but one former Scottish top-flight player has heavily criticised the players for their poor performances.
The Hoops fell to a damning cup final defeat at the hands of St Mirren on Sunday, conceding inside 90 seconds and going on to lose 3-1.
Nancy stuck with a three-man defence and the whole team looked like a disjointed mess throughout the game.
Question marks are already surrounding the Frenchman, but Ross McCormack believes a lot of blame lies with the players and their lack of effort.
McCormack, who is a Celtic fan but played with the likes of Rangers and Motherwell as well as clubs down south, had some strong words to say about certain individuals after falling to three disappointing losses.
Speaking on Open Goal, he gave his opinion on the current squad:
“Who’s not good enough? How long have you got? [Sebastian] Tounekti was good for three games, now he’s absolutely hopeless. [Benjamin] Nygren is running around like a three year old. Engels, 11 million to take a corner.”
When discussing the run of form under Martin O’Neill’s interim spell, McCormack believes that performances still lacked conviction:
“They were poor in games [under O’Neill], Dundee they were absolutely shocking. They clawed those points back because Hearts had a sticky patch.”
The Dundee game he mentions was O’Neill’s last in interim charge, where they defeated Steven Pressley’s side 1-0 at Celtic Park.
Perhaps the 39-year-old is taking some credit away for the players’ response to O’Neill’s management, but he is right in saying that not all the blame lies with Nancy.
Tonight’s game poses various questions, namely as to whether Nancy will stick with the same formation or not, given that it’s proven to be unsuccessful during his tenure so far.
