Cammy Devlin’s move to Rangers has highlighted the difference in pace between their early transfer business and Celtic’s work this summer.
Rangers have now brought in two players from Hearts and appointed former Tynecastle boss Derek McInnes as manager.
Lawrence Shankland made the move first, while Devlin has now followed him to Ibrox after leaving Hearts.
That means Rangers have taken the manager, captain and one of the key midfielders from the side that pushed Celtic deep into last season’s title race.
McInnes already knows both players well, while Shankland and Devlin understand the demands of Scottish football. There should be little doubt over what they can bring to his squad.
Across the city, Celtic’s summer business has moved more slowly.
Martin O’Neill has already made it clear that recruitment is a major priority, particularly with the Champions League qualifiers coming quickly after the domestic season begins.
The Celtic manager has spoken about going “full throttle”, but supporters are still waiting for that approach to be reflected by a steady flow of new arrivals.
There is still plenty of time left in the transfer window, and Celtic have been linked with several players in recent weeks.
However, links and interest are not the same as completed deals.
Rangers have finished more of their early business, while Celtic are still waiting for several important deals to move forward.
The contrast will not go unnoticed, especially with pre-season under way and the competitive campaign getting closer.
Celtic remain champions and are preparing for another season in which they will be expected to compete for every domestic trophy.
There is no need for panic simply because Rangers have moved faster at this stage of the summer.
Celtic may be working on a different type of target and looking across a wider market for players capable of improving O’Neill’s squad.
Still, supporters are entitled to expect progress.
Duran is an interesting first addition, but Celtic need more than one new face before the serious football begins.
The squad requires depth, competition and players who can make an immediate impact when the Champions League qualifiers arrive.
Rangers have chosen players who already know the league, while Celtic appear to be taking a broader approach to recruitment.
That may prove worthwhile, but the club now need to turn interest and negotiations into completed signings.
O’Neill has made clear that more players are needed.
The next few weeks will show whether Celtic can move quickly enough to give him the squad he wants before the first major tests of the season.
