Teddy Sheringham believes Robbie Keane will eventually become Celtic manager and claims Martin O’Neill already looks ready to step away from the role.
Speculation surrounding Celtic’s managerial position continues to intensify following the club’s domestic double-winning finish under O’Neill.
The 74-year-old twice returned to rescue one of the most chaotic seasons in recent memory and ultimately guided Celtic to both the Premiership title and Scottish Cup.
But despite the success, uncertainty remains over whether O’Neill actually wants to continue beyond the summer.
Now former Tottenham and England striker Teddy Sheringham believes the signs already point towards O’Neill stepping aside – while strongly backing his old Spurs teammate Robbie Keane to eventually take over at Celtic Park.
Speaking to BoyleSports, Sheringham said:
“Next Celtic manager? It has got to be Robbie Keane.
“His name was on the tip of my tongue the minute I heard the question. He has been around Europe.
“He has done well. He has been working in Israel and Hungary for a few years now.
“The question is whether he would want to come back so soon when he is out there gaining his experience in other countries.
“I am sure Robbie is already on Celtic’s radar, whether it will be to offer him the job now or in the future.
“I just think it is a shame Martin O’Neill does not want to carry on, but he did look tired at the end of the cup final at the weekend.
“He looked shattered. It takes a lot out of you being a manager, doesn’t it not? I do not know if the time is right for him now, but Robbie Keane will be Celtic manager one day.”
Keane’s name has remained firmly in the conversation around the Celtic vacancy for months, particularly given Dermot Desmond’s long-standing admiration for him.
Whether the club move for him immediately, though, remains unclear as discussions over O’Neill’s future continue this week.
The list of linked names isn’t exactly inspiring, and there is no clear candidate that the fan base has got behind, so far.
Celtic should’ve had a manager in the first thing on Monday morning, but for one reason or another, they’ve decided to wait until this week to conduct interviews.
