Robbie Keane has reacted after Kasper Schmeichel officially announced his retirement from football following the devastating shoulder injury that effectively ended his playing career.
The veteran goalkeeper confirmed today that doctors had informed him the chances of returning to play again were now “really small”, leaving him with little option but to retire.
Schmeichel’s contract at Celtic had been due to expire in June anyway and it was widely expected to leave the club this summer anyway.
Much like the initial revelations surrounding his shoulder surgeries earlier this season, the update again arrived through media and social media channels despite Schmeichel technically still being a Celtic player at the time.
Following the announcement, former Celtic managerial candidate Robbie Keane was among those to publicly send a message to the retiring goalkeeper.
Writing on Instagram, Keane said:
“Congrats on a great career mate, wish you all the best in the future.”
After a great first season at the Hoops, you can’t help but admit how this season has unravelled has left a bad taste in the mouth.
Kasper Schmeichel carried on playing through injury, potentially costing Celtic points and European progression.
And when it came to revealing the heartbreak of teh injuries, Celtic were seemingly left blindsided, and it came through American media, not the club.
The timing of the injury ultimately accelerated Celtic’s transition towards Sinisalo, who impressed after stepping into the side during the title run-in and cup success.
Now the club officially moves into a new era in goal following the end of a player’s career for the history books.
