Robbie Keane’s name is drifting back into the Celtic manager conversation after a hectic few days in Slovakia and Hungary.
Slovan Bratislava officially confirmed this week that Vladimír Weiss Sr. will step down after the final match of the season to take charge of the Slovak national team. Not long after, the club openly admitted Keane is one of the names being discussed internally as a possible replacement.
That immediately grabbed attention in Scotland given how often Keane has been linked with Celtic over recent months.
Slovan general director Ivan Kmotrík Jr. confirmed the former Celtic striker is someone they would like to speak to if his situation at Ferencváros changes.
He said: “Robbie Keane could also be an alternative, we will see how the situation develops in Ferencváros, if there is an opportunity, we would like to have a meeting with him as well.”
Then another development landed on Friday.
Keane has reportedly resigned as Ferencváros boss despite guiding the club to the Hungarian Cup and a Europa League quarter-final during his time there.
That naturally put more focus on Celtic’s own situation with Martin O’Neill still not confirming whether he will stay beyond Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final against Dunfermline.
Keane’s reputation does seem to be growing though.
Slovan grouped him alongside experienced names like Sergej Rebrov and Valérien Ismaël while discussing candidates publicly, which says something about how he is viewed outside Scotland.
Working at Ferencváros has also given him experience of managing a club where winning the league is expected every season while trying to compete properly in Europe. Celtic supporters will instantly understand that pressure.
Still, opinions remain split among the support.
Some see a young coach improving quickly after good work in Hungary. Others are not convinced he is the right appointment for a club needing stability after such a chaotic campaign.
For now, Celtic’s silence is only adding more noise to every managerial story elsewhere.
