Robbie Keane has now held what are being described as “constructive” talks with Celtic regarding the club’s vacant managerial position.

The former Republic of Ireland star has emerged as one of the leading contenders to become the permanent successor following Wilfried Nancy’s disastrous spell in charge earlier this season.

And while Martin O’Neill still remains firmly in the picture after delivering the domestic double, Keane’s candidacy now appears to be gathering serious momentum.

Further discussions between Celtic and Keane are reportedly already scheduled.

At the same time, principal shareholder Dermot Desmond is also expected to speak with Martin O’Neill again to gauge whether the 74-year-old has any appetite to remain involved at the club in some capacity moving forward.

It potentially opens the door to scenarios beyond O’Neill simply remaining as manager, especially given his repeated public uncertainty over whether he wants to continue full-time after such an exhausting season.

The former Ferencváros boss is believed to want Stephen Glass, Scott Brown and Jonny Hayes as part of his backroom staff.

That would certainly create a strong Celtic identity around the coaching setup.

Celtic’s hierarchy now appear to be approaching a decisive stage in the managerial process after weeks of speculation and uncertainty.

Keane genuinely looks like a very serious contender for the role rather than simply a name circulating externally.

  1. I have been a supporter for over 60 years but this is a step too far. If Keane is to become Celtic’s new manager, I will no longer support Celtic. This is not Desmond’s club, it is our club. I will not support a club run by one fraudulent stupid man who shows nothing but contempt for the supporters.

  2. Desmond can get to fuck and take Keane with him. Surely there must be some sort of legal action the fans and small shareholders can take to prevent a 34% shareholder and bully from running our club the way he wants?

  3. It’s desperate. Really rock bottom incompetence. The Celtic Recruitment extends only as far as the end of the owners moustachioed nose. 6 months on and the only contenders are the standard Irish former player DDs Thinning Black book entrants ( was Roy Keane busy? Is there anyone else in that black book! 🙂 )
Setting aside his Career Choices Robbie Keane is just not a good quality Football Manager. This is this years instalment of the intentional Managed Decline and progressive downgrading of the calibre of Celtic personnel that DD, PL and MN have achieved.

  4. im Irish and I think its a disgrace that Desmond cant see to look outside the 32 counties for a new manager. we have a worldwide fan base. how can we not look across the world for a new manager???
