Scott Brown has revealed he rejected the chance to step into the Scottish Premiership during his time at Ayr United, despite the lure of top-flight football.
Brown is currently out of work after leaving Ayr in recent weeks, bringing an end to his second managerial role following his earlier stint at Fleetwood Town.
While his first season at Ayr showed promise, reaching the play-offs before losing to Partick Thistle, the second campaign tailed off, ultimately leading to his departure.
But it could have been very different.
Brown has now confirmed he was offered a Premiership job during that period and seriously considered it.
In the end, he turned it down.
Explaining his thinking, he said on The Warmup:
“Maybe we should have jumped ship at that point in time. We could have went to the Premiership.
“We could have had an opportunity for a few months, but it would have been hard because the team were probably going to come down anyway.
“And then you’re going back into the same league for the sake of two or three months of having that Premier League experience.
“You would maybe regret it overall, but I thought what we done and where we were sitting there at the

But with Livingston, Kilmarnock and St Mirren all changing managers during the season while battling near the bottom, it’s easy to see where the opportunity may have come from.
In hindsight, Brown admits it’s a decision he might reflect on.
But at the time, it was about the bigger picture, not a short-term gamble.
He’ll take time out of the management game now and wait for his next opportunity, wherever that may come. He seems to be enjoying the punditry work at the moment.
