Later today at 5pm, thousands of Celtic supporters will face the deadline to renew their season tickets for the 2026/27 campaign.
Many will do so without knowing who will be managing the club next season.
Reports on Thursday suggested talks with Martin O’Neill and other candidates have been delayed until next week, extending a process that should have started almost five months ago when Wilfried Nancy left the club on January 5.
There are different ways to view the situation.
On one hand, asking for a few extra days is understandable. Football is a people business. Candidates have schedules, commitments and families. If Celtic believe waiting until next week gives them the best chance of securing the right manager, few would argue with that.
The issue is how it looks from the outside.
Supporters are being asked to commit hundreds of pounds before a strict deadline, while the club’s own timetable on the most important football decision of the summer remains flexible.
That contrast has not gone unnoticed.

Patience among supporters has already been stretched. Much of that patience was granted because events on the pitch improved dramatically under Martin O’Neill. Celtic recovered from a difficult position to win the Premiership before adding the Scottish Cup and securing a domestic double.
The success helped calm tensions.
Yet reports of another delay have reopened questions about why the process remains unfinished as June approaches.
It has also fuelled fresh speculation online. Some supporters have suggested an appointment may already be decided and simply waiting until after season ticket renewals are completed. There is currently no evidence to support that theory. Reports continue to indicate that multiple candidates remain under consideration, with meetings expected in London next week.
The financial backdrop makes the decision even more important.
Celtic are one Champions League play-off away from the league phase. The outcome of that tie could shape the club’s finances for the next year. Recent accounts highlighted how much revenue can be affected when Champions League football is missed.
That reality naturally creates questions around Martin O’Neill’s candidacy.
His first spell at Celtic was built during a period of aggressive investment in experienced players. Modern Celtic operates under a different model, balancing recruitment, player trading and financial sustainability.
That does not mean O’Neill would seek huge spending or that differences exist behind the scenes. However, discussions around recruitment strategy and investment are likely to form part of any talks with Dermot Desmond.
Celtic have the resources to strengthen the squad. The challenge is deciding how much to commit before knowing whether Champions League income will follow later this summer.
While supporters wait for answers on the manager, the clock continues to tick towards today’s 5pm renewal deadline.
