Shunsuke Nakamura is back involved at the top level after being appointed to the Japan national team coaching staff. The former Celtic midfielder steps into the role with the World Cup coming into view, joining a setup preparing for a busy summer.
It’s a new step for Nakamura since calling time on his playing career. He has taken on coaching roles in Japan, but this is his first job working with the senior national side.
There’s also a Celtic connection within the squad. Daizen Maeda remains a key part of Japan’s attacking options, meaning the two will now be working together in the same setup.
For Nakamura, the move from club football to international level brings a different standard. Time on the training ground is limited, and the focus quickly shifts to matches where small moments can decide things.
He said: (Japan FA), “I am delighted to announce that I have been appointed as a member of the coaching staff for the Japan national team,” the 98-time international said.
“I gave careful consideration to the impact my involvement might have at this crucial stage, with the World Cup finals just around the corner; however, after receiving a passionate and encouraging message from manager Moriyasu, I decided to accept the role.
“I am committed to sharing the same vision as the Japan national team players as they compete on the world stage, and I will do my utmost to help the team achieve its goals.”
Japan already have a clear way of playing under Hajime Moriyasu. They press high, move the ball quickly, and look to break forward as soon as they win it back.
Nakamura brings something different. His understanding of the ball and how to slow or speed up play could help in tighter matches.
It’s an interesting mix. One player built on energy, the other on control, now working together as Japan get ready for the games ahead.
