Viljami Sinisalo Responds to Martin O’Neill Goalkeeper Comments

Viljami Sinisalo has made his intentions clear ahead of the new season, insisting he plans to hold on to Celtic’s number one jersey.

The Finland international finished last season between the posts and played his part as Celtic completed a league and cup double.

Speaking to Celtic FC’s YouTube channel, Sinisalo welcomed the prospect of further competition but stressed that he has no intention of surrendering his place.

“It is a massive football club, and competition is good.

“I have always said why I came to this football club two years ago: the plan was for me to be that number one. I am delighted I got that chance. The bottom line is I have the shirt, and I intend to keep it.

“That is what I work towards every day. I understand there will always be competition, and competition brings the best out of players. That is my ambition, and it will never change.”

Sinisalo had to remain patient after arriving at Celtic, but his opportunity came during the closing stages of last season.

The goalkeeper was handed the responsibility during a demanding run of fixtures and gained valuable experience of the pressure attached to the position at Parkhead.

His performances allowed him to finish the campaign with the jersey, but he knows that last season’s success will not automatically secure his place moving forward.

Celtic are expected to provide additional competition in the goalkeeping department, and Sinisalo appears ready to meet that challenge directly.

“Absolutely [ready for the challenge]. I have never intended on being anything else. I want to be the number one and get better as I do so.

“It is an amazing club to play for. To get that chance towards the end and get a real taste of it makes you want more. That is the right mentality to have. I think I will get better as the games go on.

“I am glad to have been given that opportunity, and I intend to keep it.”

The message is a confident one from a player who has waited for his chance and now believes he is ready to establish himself permanently.

Sinisalo is not arguing that Celtic should avoid signing another goalkeeper. Instead, he is embracing the competition that comes with playing for the club and backing himself to remain first choice.

That battle will be one of the key selection stories during the remainder of pre-season, with Sinisalo determined to begin the competitive campaign in possession of the shirt he worked two years to claim.
