Johnny Kenny’s future at Celtic has come back into focus after the striker was left off the club’s squad-number list for the 2026/27 season.
Celtic confirmed the updated numbers ahead of the league opener against Dundee, with new signings Kasper Høgh and Camilo Duran given the number nine and 11 shirts.
Kenny was not named on the list.
The 23-year-old played regularly during the early part of last season before joining Bolton Wanderers on loan in January.
He scored six goals during his time in England and helped Bolton win promotion to the Championship.
Bolton have since been linked with a permanent move for Kenny, and his absence from Celtic’s latest squad-number update will add to the talk around his future.
It should not, however, be seen as proof that he is leaving the club.
The Celtic Way reports that Kenny has been carrying an injury, which explains why he has not featured during pre-season or been included in the squad to face Dundee.
That is important when looking at his current situation.
Even so, Kenny’s place in the squad is less certain after the arrivals of Høgh and Duran.
Both players have been handed important squad numbers, while Celtic have spent heavily to bring Høgh to the club.
Kenny would face more competition for game time if he stays at Parkhead.
His good loan spell at Bolton also means there should be interest in him before the transfer window closes.
Celtic now have a decision to make over whether Martin O’Neill sees a role for Kenny or whether a permanent move would suit everyone involved.
The club have not given any official update on his future, and the missing squad number does not settle the issue by itself.
It does, however, raise more questions around what comes next for Kenny, with his future likely to become clearer before the window shuts.
