Celtic’s search for a new goalkeeper could present an intriguing opportunity following developments at Nottingham Forest.
Stefan Ortega Moreno is among a number of players set to leave Forest after the conclusion of the season, the club have confirmed.
The experienced German goalkeeper joined the Premier League side from Manchester City in January on a short-term contract running until the end of the campaign.
Despite only arriving midway through the season, Ortega featured 10 times and played a role in Forest’s run to the Europa League semi-finals.
His departure now leaves him available on a free transfer.
That may be of interest to Celtic.
Ortega was previously linked with a move to Parkhead when his Manchester City contract was approaching its conclusion, with the Hoops eyeing a deal this summer – after the expiry of his current deal.
The 33-year-old brings a wealth of experience at the highest level.
During his time at City, Ortega made 56 appearances under Pep Guardiola and was part of the club’s historic 2022/23 treble-winning squad.
Forest paid a modest £500,000 to bring him to the City Ground, but he now finds himself available once again.
The timing is interesting given Celtic’s current situation between the posts.
Following the retirement of Kasper Schmeichel after a career-ending shoulder injury, Viljami Sinisalo stepped in admirably during the title run-in and Scottish Cup triumph.
The Finnish goalkeeper did little wrong and played a major role in helping Martin O’Neill secure the domestic double.
However, there remains a belief within the club that further competition and experience are required if Celtic are to successfully navigate Champions League qualifiers and another demanding campaign.

Several names have already been linked, including Jari De Busser, but Ortega’s availability adds another experienced option to the market.
The question for Celtic is whether they want a long-term successor to Schmeichel or an established goalkeeper capable of competing immediately with Sinisalo.
Ortega would undoubtedly fall into the latter category.
Given his experience of winning trophies, playing under Guardiola and performing in European competition, he is exactly the type of profile Celtic may be considering as they prepare for a crucial summer rebuild.
