Stephen Welsh has bid Celtic an emotional farewell after his departure from the club was confirmed this week.
Welsh spent last season on loan at Motherwell, establishing himself as a key figure in a side built around an aggressive, high-pressure style. His performances in Lanarkshire earned praise, but it was clear his long-term future was likely to lie away from Celtic Park.
That became official on Wednesday when Swansea City announced the defender had signed a two-year contract, with the Championship club holding the option of a further 12 months.
Celtic recently agreed to terminate Welsh’s contract by mutual consent, a move described as a gesture of goodwill in recognition of his service to the club.
It brings an end to a Celtic journey that began long before his senior debut against Hamilton Accies in February 2020.
Although he never managed to cement a regular starting place, Welsh was a dependable squad option across several seasons and played his part during one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history.
Between league titles, domestic cups and memorable European nights, he leaves with an impressive haul of 10 major honours, including five Premiership titles.
Many supporters will remember Welsh’s contribution during Ange Postecoglou’s early years in charge, when injuries and squad transitions regularly called for players to step up. He was one of those trusted to do exactly that.
Following confirmation of his move to Swansea, Welsh took to Instagram to share a heartfelt video looking back on his time at Celtic.

The compilation featured clips from throughout his journey, including footage of him as a youngster wearing the famous green and white hoops. It also included highlights from his first-team career, goals, celebrations and moments shared with the Celtic support, particularly during Postecoglou’s tenure.
For any academy player, representing the club they supported as a boy is something special. Welsh managed that and collected a trophy cabinet many professionals could only dream of along the way.
His time at Celtic may be over, but we wish him all the best with his future endeavours!
