Stephen Welsh has said goodbye to Celtic after completing his move to Swansea City, bringing an end to an 18-year association with the club.
The defender came through the ranks at Lennoxtown and made his first-team debut under Neil Lennon in 2020. He went on to play a part in several successful seasons, helping Celtic win league titles and domestic cups during his time in the senior squad.
Welsh was never a guaranteed starter, but managers trusted him when he was called upon. Whether it was covering for injuries, stepping into European fixtures or helping the team through a busy run of games, he was often asked to do a job without the fanfare that comes with being a regular first-choice player.
The move to Swansea offers him the chance to play more football week in, week out. At 26, he is at an age where regular minutes matter, and a fresh challenge in the Championship could be exactly what he needs.
Welsh reflected on his time at Celtic in an emotional message shared with supporters.
He said: (Instagram), “Celtic has always been a massive part of my life.
“Being able to live your dream is something I would never take for granted.
“18 years of ups, downs and special moments that so few have the privilege to experience.
“I would like to thank every staff member and player who have been part of this journey.
“The work behind the scenes from an early age until now doesn’t go unnoticed.
“I would also like to thank my family who, without them, none of this wouldn’t have been possible.
“And finally to the fans. You follow the team everywhere we go and support us through thick and thin.
“A special mention to Green Brigade and Bhoys. You’re there and you’re always there.
“Although sometimes things can be tough on and off the pitch you stick by the team through it all.
“It’s been a real pleasure. Thankyou.”
Welsh leaves Celtic with the respect of supporters who watched one of their own come through the academy and reach the first team.
Breaking into the Celtic side is never straightforward, particularly when the club is competing for trophies every season and constantly looking to strengthen key areas of the squad. Welsh managed to establish himself as a reliable option despite that competition.
His spell at the club also coincided with a period of change. He experienced difficult moments, but he also played his part in successful campaigns that brought silverware back to Celtic Park.
For Welsh, the next chapter begins in Wales, but his connection to Celtic will remain. After nearly two decades at the club, his farewell message showed exactly what those years meant to him.
