Chris Sutton has thrown his support behind Elijah Just amid ongoing Celtic transfer links, insisting the Motherwell winger should not still be at Fir Park next season.

The New Zealand international enjoyed an impressive season at Motherwell and has continued to attract attention heading into the summer window. His pace, direct running and ability to carry the ball up the pitch made him one of the Premiership’s most dangerous attacking players.

Celtic have been credited with an interest on more than one occasion. Earlier this year, CeltsAreHere spoke exclusively to Just’s agent, Gustaf Grauers, who confirmed there was interest in the player while making it clear his focus remained on Motherwell and New Zealand’s World Cup campaign.

That situation has not changed publicly, but Sutton believes Just is ready to move on from Fir Park after the season he has produced.

The former Celtic striker has been impressed by what he has seen from the winger during his time in Scotland.

Sutton has watched Just closely throughout the campaign and believes he is capable of stepping up to a bigger club.

He said: (the Warm Up), “Just is just a revelation. I think he is such an intelligent footballer. He can’t be at Motherwell next season.

“If Celtic or Rangers don’t touch him, then they are stupid.”

The comments reflect the growing attention around the 26-year-old.

Just finished the season as one of Motherwell’s standout performers. He regularly caused problems and showed he could affect matches even when his side spent periods without the ball.

From a Celtic perspective, it is easy to understand why he has been linked with the club. He is comfortable taking on defenders, works hard without possession and has shown he can produce goals and assists in the Premiership.

Whether Celtic make a move remains to be seen. The club’s managerial situation may have a bearing on recruitment plans, while interest from elsewhere could also develop as the summer progresses.

What is beyond doubt is that Just’s stock has risen over the past year. Sutton’s comments are another reminder of how highly the Motherwell winger is regarded, and it would be no surprise if further transfer speculation follows in the weeks ahead.
