Chris Sutton believes Celtic produced their best performance of the season when the pressure was at its highest after Sunday’s 3-1 win over Rangers at Celtic Park.

The former Celtic striker was on commentary duty for the Glasgow Derby and watched Martin O’Neill’s side respond brilliantly after falling behind early in the first half.

Rangers had started brightly and took the lead through Mikey Moore after Celtic were caught open during a quick transition. There were nerves around the stadium at that stage, especially with Hearts still sitting one point clear at the top of the Premiership table.

But Celtic grew into the game.

Luke McCowan and Arne Engels started finding more space between the lines and Kieran Tierney became a major outlet down the left side. Yang Hyun-jun brought Celtic level before the break after a sharp move involving Engels and McCowan.

Then came the moment everyone inside Celtic Park will remember.

Daizen Maeda’s overhead kick to make it 3-1 completely changed the atmosphere inside the ground. Even by derby standards, it was outrageous technique from the Japanese forward. The finish left Jack Butland standing still as the ball dropped into the far corner.

Sutton was clearly impressed by both the goal and Celtic’s overall display after the final whistle.

The former striker also pointed towards the work Martin O’Neill has done since taking charge during a chaotic campaign which at one stage looked to be slipping away from Celtic.

The result leaves Celtic one point behind Hearts with two matches remaining.

Attention now turns to Fir Park on Wednesday night before Hearts arrive at Celtic Park for what could become a title decider on the final day of the season.
