Celtic are reportedly amongst several clubs who are interested in a 6’7″ centre-back who came through the ranks at Bayern Munich’s academy. The wait goes on for the club to announce its first permanent signing of the January transfer window, 20 days since its opening.

A striker remains the priority, but defensive reinforcements shouldn’t be far behind on the list. The Hoops recalled Stephen Welsh from his loan at Motherwell to provide cover, with the 26-year-old partnering Dane Murray at the back in the Scottish Cup win over Auchinleck Talbot.

It’s now being reported that Martin O’Neill’s side are interested in towering defender Jamie Lawrence. The 23-year-old moved from Germany to Austrian side WSG Tirol in summer 2024 and has made 20 appearances so far this season.

Lawrence is out of contract at the end of this campaign, but Celtic, along with clubs in Spain, Turkey and China, are said to be monitoring his situation this month (Glasgow World); he has previously been capped 14 times at Germany U20 level.

The wait goes on to see what Celtic do in this current transfer window, with Julian Araujo remaining the only new arrival on loan from Bournemouth.

Reports confirmed that a transfer meeting was held at Lennoxtown on Monday night, with Martin O’Neill, Michael Nicholson, Shaun Maloney and new scout James Bell-Walker in attendance. Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph said the club have ‘made a lot of enquiries, for a lot of players’, though few have reached any further stage.
