Trusty’s World Cup ended in disappointment from a team point of view, but on a personal level it was a huge moment in his career. The centre-back made his debut at the tournament and scored for his country, giving him a memory that will stay with him for the rest of his life.

Posting on Instagram, Trusty wrote: “A dream I’ll carry with me forever.

“Not the ending we hoped for, but wearing this badge, representing my country, making my World Cup debut, and scoring on the biggest stage in football are moments I’ll never take for granted.”

For Celtic, it was another major moment for a player who has had to work hard for every step of his career. Trusty has not always had things easy in Glasgow, but his World Cup involvement showed the level he is capable of reaching when he gets his chance.

His goal was a proud moment for the player, his family and everyone who has followed his journey. It also gave Celtic supporters a reason to keep an even closer eye on the USA during the tournament.

Trusty also used his message to look beyond his own achievement. He spoke about the importance of inspiring young players across America and making sure the tournament leaves a lasting impact.

He wrote: “One of our biggest goals was bigger than winning matches. It was to inspire the next generation.”

The Celtic defender added: “Most of all, I hope young players saw that there’s a pathway to this stage and believed, maybe for the first time, that one day it could be them. Because every player who steps onto the world’s biggest stage was once just a kid with a ball and a dream.”

It was a strong message from Trusty, who clearly understands what his World Cup moment can mean beyond the pitch.

He also thanked the supporters who backed the team throughout the tournament, saying the squad felt that support throughout the journey.

Trusty ended his post by writing: “This isn’t the end of the story. It’s the beginning of the next chapter.

“The best is still ahead.”

That will be the line Celtic supporters hope proves true at club level as well.

Trusty will return from the World Cup with confidence, experience and a major international moment behind him. Now the challenge is to carry that into the new season at Celtic, where competition for places will be fierce and Martin O’Neill will want every player ready from the start.
